Every Tuesday, I have a “Little Chat with Shannon” live stream in the 52 Cues Community. This topic was on my mind recently.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone for being so supportive during our recent time off. We rarely take breaks—given the hectic Full Sail schedule plus 52 Cues, clients, and deadlines—but we managed to squeeze in some time for ourselves. It's crucial to unplug and take care of ourselves, especially in this post-COVID era. The pandemic messed with our sense of time and routine, and getting back into self-care mode is essential.

For us, our extended family’s little beach cottage in Oak Island, North Carolina, has been a geographical touchpoint. Despite our many moves and career shifts, this place has remained constant throughout our marriage. It's like a home base that keeps us grounded and reminds us of where we've come from and gets us thinking about where we’re heading. Finding such a touchpoint in your life—something that has always been there—can be centering and reassuring.

It’s our place to unplug. We’ve learned over the years that it's essential to recognize that people unplug in different ways. For instance, I am an introvert and recharge by spending time alone, disconnecting from notifications and distractions, and daydreaming, drawing, or reading. On the other hand, Dave, being more of an extrovert, unplugs by playing games online and staying informed on the latest news across a wide swath of interests.

It’s taken us several years to figure out a balance, but we managed it during this vacation by mixing our styles—morning walks on the beach and sunsets at “The Point” and the Southport waterfront for me, and movies, World of Warcraft games nights, and interactive discussions for Dave. The key is finding what works for you and for your partner or family, and honoring each others’ unplugging styles.

So, my advice to all of you is this: take the time you need to unplug and recharge, whichever way works best for you. If watching a movie or playing games helps you unwind, embrace it! If you’d prefer quiet daydreaming or reading a great book, go with it. There's no one-size-fits-all approach to self-care, and that's perfectly fine. Recharging will energize you and enable you to be there for your family, friends, work, or anything that requires your attention.
